As prayer
trainers we want the kids we impact to ultimately do the
works of Jesus which means they will become like Him.
The only way for this to happen is for them to learn to
be in His presence and under His influence. I heard
about this idea of "pickling" during a kids ministry
training event and wanted to share it with you because
it is an excellent object lesson and has a lasting
impact (see notes below about using this as an object
lesson).
Training kids in the art of soaking in God's presence, or pickling
(as they will love to call it) is not hard to do. Here
are a few things to keep in mind... |
- Plan TIME when training
kids in this area...lots of TIME! Don't get in a
rush - push everything else aside if necessary to
make room. You don't want them to get a "vibe" that
you're trying to get from point a to point z in a
certain amount of time. Having said that, have a
back up plan for shorter quiet times until kids get
comfortable being in Jesus' presence.
- You may want to use MUSIC
as a cue to help them get quiet and to know what is
coming next.
- Kids will need to
find a comfortable and relaxing PLACE to get
quiet before the Lord. Encourage them to do this at
home as well as at church. This will mean you may
need to change your classroom decor to accommodate
"comfort" and quiet.
- Train kids to get QUIET
quickly. First, to get quiet outwardly (close their
mouth, stop tapping, quit kicking their feet, etc.).
Second to get quiet inwardly (still their mind and
thoughts).
- Their THOUGHTS: After kids
are quiet, talk them through a cleansing prayer that
they can learn to pray. Write it on your own, or
have them help you. Basically, they need to ask God
to wash their mind, to cleanse their thoughts and
then to fill them with His thoughts which are the
right thoughts.
- Their HEARTS: Your kids will need to get
their hearts "synchronized" with the heart of God.
Whatever is important to Him becomes important to
them. As a trainer, you will need to grow in
sensitivity that will help you spot this in the kids
you train.
- Their FOCUS: Train them to keep their
focus by interjecting comments calmly when you feel
it is necessary. Remind them not to think about
homework, friends, food, school, or even church
activities. They need to keep their minds focused.
This will be difficult for the older kids to get
because of their conditioning and short attention
spans.

Pickling Object Lesson
You will need a cucumber, a jar of pickles (any type of
whole pickle will do), a bowl of water.
|
- Talk about pickles
with the kids (what kind do they like, don't like,
etc.).
- Then, show them
the jar and talk about how that cucumber you have
gets turned into a pickle.
- Demonstrate that
just dipping the cucumber doesn't change it and
contrast that to quick prayers.
- Talk about how
soaking is what turns the cucumber into a pickle.
- Then explain how
soaking in prayer helps to turn normal kids into
supernatural kids.
- Demonstrate how
soaking prayer works by starting your "pickling
training."

Can you believe it? A cucumber that soaks for a long time in
vinegar and spices turns into a pickle! However, if a
cucumber is only dipped into the pickling stuff, it won't be
a pickle. It takes time to make a pickle and lots of soaking
in the "pickling" stuff.
What does this have to do with prayer? You can become more like
Jesus by getting
"pickled" in His presence. This means spending time talking
with Him and getting to know Him and His Word. Just taking
quick "dips" in His presence won't get the same results as
soaking. |
When you pray and have quiet time, you want these things to have a
lasting impact on you - changing you from just an ordinary
kid into someone who is more like Jesus...supernatural!
So, are you ready to get PICKLED? Then as part of your prayer, be
sure to spend quiet time listening to what He says back to
you. Another way is to spend time thinking about heaven - a
great place to start is Revelation 4. Getting pickled is
worth every minute! LET'S GET PICKLED! |

Get Pickled |
From the
preschool journal of Miss Heather.
I talked to the children about how a cucumber is soaked/immersed in
vinegar until it becomes a pickle…just like a
cucumber we can soak in God’s presence and get
pickled in His presence. I had them get out
their blankets (if they didn’t have a blanket I
had mats for them) and find a space where they
could get quiet before God…they had to quiet
their bodies and their mouths and their
minds…just think about Jesus…I turned off the
lights and put on the CD “Come to the Waters”
and I told them how special they were to God and
how much He loves them, etc. and I encouraged
them to think about Jesus and soak in His
presence.
When I gathered them together afterwards (after
about 15 minutes or so) this is what they told
me they heard God say to them or show them:
Noah—I do something that God wants me to do…but
I don’t hear Him.
Katelyn—He was in my heart.
Joshua L.—He talked to my heart about me…
Nikki—He told me that He loves me and likes me.
Danny—He loves me.
Grace—He loves me and He loves my family and my
brother and grandpa and my grandma
Benjamin—painting
Joshua L.—I was a koala in a house and was being
funny like a koala (important to ask if this
could be from God and how do we know if it is or
not)
Elizabeth M.—I should sleep
Luke—that I was asleep
A few days
later..."everyday the children still ask me if
we can get pickled. The first two times I did
“pickle prayer” I initiated it, but since then
everyday the children have been the ones
initiating it. Today we didn’t really have time
for it, but after lunch they could choose to
either look at books or get pickled (all but 2
chose to get pickled) even though it was only
for a very short time." |
