While in
Livingston, Texas, for a kids prayer camp the
youth pastor showed me something awesome that he
is using to promote prayer among the youth
group. I couldn't wait to get home to post it
for your benefit.
Prayer Candle
Jeremy (youth pastor) discovered that using
a prayer candle during youth prayer was a great
way to help kids mark their time spent actually
praying. As young people gather for pre-service
prayer, someone lights their prayer candle which
stays lit the entire thirty minutes of the
prayer time. When they have finished praying,
someone extinguishes the flame and sets the
candle aside for the next group prayer meeting.
When the entire candle is burned down, they add
it to their "prayer trophy" display. It becomes
a visual reminder of seasons of prayer spent
together as a group.
Home
Application
Jeremy soon discovered that the idea could
be expanded to encourage prayer at home among
his youth group. Jeremy provides a small votive
candle and holder to each youth and as they
return the empty votive holders, he supplies
them with a new candle and holder. The empty
votive holder is added to their prayer trophy
wall. Every empty wax-coated votive holder
represents hours of prayer.
Track Record
This new method is helping his kids get a
visual idea of their prayer time. Those who are
slow at returning a votive holder and don't see
as many of their contributions on the display
can readily see the need for more prayer
visually. He explained that this simple concept
has helped build positive peer pressure and is
impacting the youth group because prayer changes
things.

Jeremy's idea a try? Please do and write to let
us know how it impacts your kids, family
devotion or youth. It's a great idea, Jeremy!
