So many times I've found myself getting caught up in trying to learn from others to the point that my own creativity gets lost in the shuffle. Has this ever happened to you? Or perhaps you are someone who has always felt like you lacked imagination or your creativity level isn't as high as that of someone else? I've found that brainstorming is one way of discovering or reclaiming my creative side. Here is a quick example of how it works and how it can benefit kids prayer.
I went to a Toys-R-Us store between Sunday services (Wal-Mart is another great location) and walked around, trying to find objects that would help me teach kids about prayer. I found the following three items and am excited to tell you that the application of these toys are "deep and wide"; and not all the ideas are mine.
To expand the process, I shared these items with my partner in kids prayer. She came up with several ideas that were excellent and different from mine...which sparked even more ideas. Then, I shared the same three toys with a group of Christian Educators from Gateway College of Evangelism this morning; they came up with a wonderful and profound array of ideas too.
Here are pictures of the toys, a picture of the gals who were such a help at GCE, and our compiled ideas. If you have anything different that comes to mind, please email me and I'll post your response to add to the list. Let the fun begin!!!

  • Stethoscope
    • Listen to hear the needs of others with your physical and spiritual ears. (Part of LABB Lesson)
    • The diaphragm (drum at the end) is very sensitive. God is very sensitive to us. We can tell Him anything and He will listen.
    • The stethoscope helps bring out the truth about our heart; so does prayer.
    • We should be sensitive to the heartbeat (passions, likes, dislikes) of others when we pray, especially the heartbeat of Jesus.
  • Sphere
    • Prayer can take on different shapes and sizes (move the sphere from small to large).
    • Everyone is given a little bit of faith, but it can expand as we use it.
    • Praying makes us strong (interlock praying hands inside/through the expanded sphere).
    • Everyone is kind of linked together in the spirit by prayer.
  • Etch-A-Sketch
    • Our lives can be filled with sin (etchings), but prayer can "shake us up," and if we ask, Jesus will forgive us and wipe the slate clean with no hint of what was there before.
    • There are two knobs...it's like our human spirit and the Holy Spirit have to work together in prayer if we're going to accomplish anything.
    • Kids could use it to draw or write their prayer requests.
    • Kids could use this to draw or write something they felt came from Jesus.
