In a recent seminar on kids and prayer at "PrayerQuake,"
a prayer mobilizing conference held in Phoenix,
Arizona, I was introduced to some important
information about kids prayer.
First, in a workshop led by Kim Butts, a strong kids prayer
advocate, I learned that we, the church, have
done a great job in segregating parts of the
Body of Christ. Our prayer meetings are mainly
for adults, and if we include the kids, it's
usually in a separate area. How can we have a
'corporate' prayer meeting without
representatives from the various generations?
Second, I had to ask myself two questions:
1) What does Scripture say about inter-generational prayer?
2) Is my church in line with Scripture?
In answering those two tough questions, I discovered that I needed
a resource that would help me change my thinking
and change my behavior and advocacy for kids
prayer. The first resource is God's Word; there
are "a bunch" (around eight that Kim shared with
us) of precedents in Scripture for
inter-generational prayer. The second resource
is Kim's new book, The Praying Family.
It's full of practical ways to pray as a family
and the ideas are adaptable for use in a
church's efforts at occasional
inter-generational prayer events.
Inter-generational prayer isn't something that is done on a daily
basis in the church, but should happen daily in
the home. When it comes to the corporate nature
of the Body of Christ in a local assembly,
events that get the generations to pray together
are highly desired and desperately needed.
