Miss Heather's Prayer Chain Idea
The other day we started a prayer chain (one of those paper chains, where you
keep attaching a loop of paper until it’s as long as you want it).
So, I told them that we were going to make a prayer chain, but the only way to
make it was to say a prayer first.
Every time they prayed I would write it on a strip of paper and then they could
help me add it to the chain.
We only had enough time for each child to say one prayer.
Then I hung up the chain and said I wonder how long we can make our chain.
"Let’s see if we can make it really long."
Well, after lunch a child came back from putting his lunch away and he
came to me and said, "Miss Heather, I want to pray." So, he said his prayer; I
wrote it; and, he helped put it on the chain. I said, "look, Aidan, helped make
our chain longer." Soon, after lunch many children were praying and adding to
the chain. It got long enough to touch the floor from where I had first hung it,
so I showed them how I had to move it higher now (to the top of the bulletin
board). Today, they added to it, so we started making loops with it (using it
like garland) and now they want to see if they can make the chain go across the
room. Some of the prayers include:
Dear God, please help me be kinder.
Dear God, protect our homes from the enemies.
Dear God, I love you.
Dear God, thank you for fruits and vegetables.
Dear God, please give money to the people who don’t have food.
Dear God, have fun and help my mommy and daddy to have fun and to pray.
Dear God, thank you for chairs and people and broccoli.
