Will Somebody Pray for the
Children?
Focus on Africa
When we talk about Africa and why we should pray for
that continent many reasons come to mind including:
poverty, immorality and false religion. However, the
most overwhelming reason that came to my mind and the
one common denominator amongst all nations of Africa is
the rapid mortality rate due to HIV/AIDS. More
importantly, I often ask myself “ Where will this leave
the children?”
In Matthew 18:3-5 we find Jesus using children as
an illustration stating, “Except ye be converted, and
become as little children, ye shall not enter into the
kingdom of heaven”. The scripture goes on to say,
“Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little
child, the same is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven
and whoso receive one such little child in my name
receiveth me”. Not for one moment can we doubt the
tenderness of Jesus Christ for children as He always
took time for them. The same should hold true for us
today.
Africa, as a continent, has the highest number of
HIV/AIDS victims in the world and the virus
continues to spread. The AIDS epidemic has left thirteen
million orphans in Africa which is more than the
population of New York City. Almost three million of
these deaths are children. Life expectancy has dropped
drastically by half, from age 68 to age 34. It has
reached pandemic proportions according to the World
Health Organization. Forty million AIDS orphans are
predicted by 2010, less than five years away. Perhaps
the most shocking statistic is that 50% of the African
Continent's population is age fifteen and under. Even
though the death rate is so high, the population will
increase from 700 million to 1.5 billion in the next
twenty four years.
I am making an appeal to every person who reads this
article to reach a higher and more intensified level of
prayer focus for the children on Africa’s Continent. We
need to get our children involved in the prayer efforts
too, explaining to them the dire situation and need for
their prayer. If we as the church are not willing to
assume this responsibility, who will?
