A very personal
experience
Anna was five years old when I met her at a national
prayer conference back in 2002. It was my first time to
do kids prayer training and she was my youngest
attendee. I wasn't sure how we'd handle a five-year-old,
or how she'd handle us, but she did great. As it turns
out, she was like a sponge and soaked up all the
training she could hold. She practiced praying for
others using globes and various other prayer tools,
participated in a virtual prayer walk, and was a leader
to some of the older kids.
When Anna left the conference, she taught everything she knew to
her younger brother. They would pray for people at the
drop of a hat; it did not matter if they were driving
down the road or riding in a cart at Wal-Mart. Anna
would pick a car type and color to pray for as they
loaded up to go somewhere. Each time a car would pass
fitting her predetermined description, they would pray
for the people in the car and their families, etc. Anna
put into practice and expanded principles she'd learned
in two short days.
Fast forward two years. Six weeks before the next national prayer
conference, the World Network of Prayer got a call from
Anna's dad. She had been playing outside and chased
after a ball into the street...she wasn't expected to
live. Praying Anna had gone on to receive her reward.
What kind of a reward could a seven-year old possibly
expect?
Now, for the rest of the story. One afternoon, all of her teachers
served her family a prepared meal during the difficult
time following her funeral. Her parents were a little
dazed at their response to Anna's death, until they
found out why. It turns out that Anna had a habit of
praying for all of her teachers every single day at
school. In fact, Anna and a friend held hands and prayed
at a specific time of day and as students pass them by
they would often hand them notes that contained prayer
needs for their families or friends.
Five-year old Anna took praying seriously. As a result, her prayers
impacted her family, strangers, teachers, friends, and
church members. After her death, it is said that her
church had more visitors who came out of respect for her
than had come in months prior to her passing.
I tell
this story from time to time at kids prayer training
events because I want kids to know that even as young as
Anna was, she made a difference in her world. I
challenge children to have the passion of Anna come over
them, if they are willing to be a blessing to others by
offering up prayers for them continually. Today, there
are a growing number of children being exposed to this
story, and the impact of Anna's life continues to grow.
I've seen boys cry over this story as well as girls. I
believe their tears come from a hunger to make a
difference too. And they can, if someone will simply
take the time to show them the way.
May the
story of Anna grip your heart and may the spirit of Anna
be found in the children you minister to. |
