Here is a
story from a local church in Louisiana about their endeavor to bring the
"Gift of Prayer" to their community by prayerwalking in a local mall.
The Gift of Prayer
By Lawanda
Carley & Janice Moorman
Just before
Christmas, we decided to give our fifth grade prayer
ministers an opportunity to give the gift of prayer to
people outside of their little circle of influence.
We planned a prayer walk to the Alexandria Mall.
In route to the mall with 10 young prayer warriors we
readied ourselves spiritually through prayer. We
wanted to be effective for God and to be ready to offset
anything the enemy would throw our way. Each child
prayed a specific prayer for each of these needs and we
spent time praising God to invite His presence on our
walk.
Equipped with simple signs proclaiming "Our Gift
to You….. A Christmas Prayer," a gift wrapped box for
prayer requests and the power of God, we reached the
mall and began our Christmas Prayer Walk! We stopped to
pray at two strategic points and then approached the
eating area. Again we prayed for those in this area. As
we prayed we became aware of curious glances from
shoppers. The kids were enthusiastic about reaching out
to these people so we discussed ways to approach them
without being offensive. Immediately they covered the
area in groups of two or three, asking the shoppers in
the area if they had a need that we could help them pray
about. We watched in amazement as people took the prayer
request forms, spent precious time filling them out and
dropped them into our box. These young prayer ministers
went to young, old, different ethnic groups, everyone
that they saw. Looking with God’s eyes they saw needs
everywhere they turned. It was overwhelming to see the
response that they received. The people were not
grudgingly humoring a child's request -- they EAGERLY
reached for the forms and wrote freely, sharing their
need for God's help in their lives.
One of the most amazing experiences was seeing
two of our fifth grade boys approach three older
teenagers who quickly wrote out requests for them with
no antagonism or scorn. One of our students later shared
that he felt he had reached around the world when he
asked a foreigner who could barely speak English for a
prayer request.
We boarded our van awed by the response to our
gift and praising God for the wonderful blessing WE had
been given in return. Our students were so caught up in
their mission that we had to practically drag them away
because of our time limitations! They were still
receiving requests as we made our way out of the mall.
We had been there for less than an hour and had received
30 requests. We read the requests and prayed together
for the people and their needs. The students have
continued to cover these requests in prayer individually
and corporately.
At a recent children's service held in the main
auditorium, members of the fifth grade prayer
ministry handed out prayer cloths. One of church members
took the prayer cloth to the hospital. His mother had
been in a coma for days with no response whatsoever.
Within two minutes when prayer cloth was placed on her
body, she awoke from her coma. These reports and others
like it have kindled a fiery zeal for prayer in the
hearts of these young people.
People are in need and waiting for the gift of prayer
to be offered to them. God has a special place for
children in this ministry. A child can melt every
obstacle with their genuine concern and total faith that
their prayers make a difference. The people at the Mall
could not help but respond to the simple faith of a
child. And God cannot help but respond to the prayers of
an innocent, trusting child who is not concerned about
acclaim but fervent in their desire to do something for
God!
